Leonardo went to Friuli

in 1500, for the Republic of Venice and there it applied its military defensive strategies with the use of water. He made inspections in Gorizia, on the Isonzo that flows through Slovenia and Italy.

He made inspections in Vipava

and on the banks of the homonymous tributary of the Isonzo, which originates in the territory of present-day Slovenia.

He will remember that he ordered the construction of a dam,

“A mobile barrier” in the Isonzo and Vipava valleys, in his autographs in recent years in France.

Vipava

Named the “Venice of Slovenia” due to the presence of bridges on the river of the same name and numerous sources, Vipava has fascinating views and is a picturesque old town with traditional houses. The distinctive feature of Vipava, which is located on the slopes of Mount Nanos, is certainly the water. Seven springs gush from the ground, giving life to its canals. Among the places to visit are the wonderful Palazzo Lantieri, from the Baroque period, and the ruins of an ancient castle dating back to the 12th century on top of a hill. The Vipava Valley is characterized by an interesting wine-making activity, which, also thanks to the climate of the Valley, has achieved excellent results, in particular for the excellent red wines, including Merlot.
